Phylotaxis

Nature rarely creates forms without structure. Behind the apparent freedom of a flower opening, the arrangement of leaves around a stem, or the intricate organization of seeds within a sunflower lies an underlying logic. These structures emerge through countless small relationships, where each element finds its place within a larger system. This invisible order became the starting point for my Phylotaxis collection.

The inspiration comes from phyllotaxis — the natural arrangement of leaves, seeds, and other botanical elements during plant growth. In many plants, mathematical relationships, rotational sequences, and spiral patterns allow individual elements to occupy space with remarkable efficiency. Yet what fascinates me most is not the mathematics itself, but how such simple principles can produce extraordinary visual complexity.

The collection began with a question: What happens when the logic of biological growth is translated into an abstract visual language?

Rather than reproducing botanical forms, I wanted to explore the forces that appear to shape them — expansion, repetition, variation, balance, and the continuous movement from a central origin toward the surrounding space.

Each composition develops around a common centre. Hundreds of individual lines radiate outward, gradually increasing in length, density, and visual intensity. Their arrangement creates a circular structure that seems simultaneously precise and unpredictable. At first glance, the image may resemble a flower, a burst of light, or a celestial phenomenon. Yet none of these associations defines it completely.

The subject is not the object, but the process through which form becomes possible.

Colour introduces another dimension to this exploration. Although the works share a related geometric structure, each palette transforms the emotional character of the composition. Cool blues, turquoise, and muted mineral tones evoke depth, water, and atmospheric stillness. Intense reds, oranges, and yellows suggest heat, solar energy, and explosive transformation. Violet, lavender, and luminous yellow create a more ambiguous space between warmth and coolness, movement and contemplation.

For me, colour is not simply a decorative element. It changes how we perceive rhythm, density, distance, and movement. The same structural principle can become an entirely different visual experience through the relationships between colours.

The black background plays an equally important role. It removes the suggestion of a conventional environment, allowing every line to exist as an independent event within an undefined space. The central darkness becomes a point of potential, while the expanding geometry suggests emergence — as if a complex structure were gradually revealing itself from something initially invisible.

There is also a deliberate tension between control and freedom.
